Biography
Fiona Williams’ artwork is inspired mainly by creation, landscape, nature and science. It is expressed through lyrical abstraction. Her paintings have layers of meaning. The subject matter is "the vehicle through which intangible things" can be expressed" (Crozier).
Fiona’s life experiences and history have provided the platform through which different themes and influences have interwoven with her artwork, resulting in the paintings and works we see today.
Fiona was born in West Africa .She was the first of 2 sets of twins. Shortly before her 8th birthday, her family made their final return sea voyage to the UK.
Not long after moving to South London, Fiona was a winner of a national schools' painting competition. It so happened that her next door neighbour was a friend of her school's Art teacher. The neighbour was a retired Art teacher who had trained as an artist at the Slade school of Art. He very kindly encouraged Fiona's drawing and painting skills to develop.
Following a foundation course in Art and Design, Fiona’s path turned to training as a paediatric nurse at Great Ormond Street Hospital, and then as a midwife at Queen Charlotte's Hospital, London. There her awe of creation and creative processes was inspired. This led her back to making art while working and then, later, as a Mother of 4 children. Fiona later enrolled on a BA Fine Art course at Winchester School of Art, part of Southampton University.
Fiona's experience of nursing in paediatric ICU and her late husband's battle with terminal illness has left her with a deep awareness of the fragility of life, and that life is very temporal. Her son, too, has recently won his fight against blood cancer. This theme of temporality is weaved into many of Fiona's paintings
Many of the artworks celebrate nature and landscape using colour and physicality of paint. Fiona draws inspiration from spaces that connect with elements of the natural world to paint landscapes and waterscapes. They open Fiona's eyes to the beauty of creation and to her Creator.
