Artist Statement
I am an abstract artist with a love for colour, mark-making and exploring the possibilities of the spontaneous. My paintings are the result of experimentation and intuition.
The complexities of my painting are seen in the different textures and different weights of painting. It is seen in the contrasts between the thick, opaque layers of paint and the thin, translucent washes of paint. The erasures of paint contrast with the areas of colour which are made with the dense application of oil paint with a brush. This makes interesting contrasts of densities, painted textures and different qualities of visual perception; exploring relationships between translucency and opacity, colour and texture.
The subject" is the vehicle through which I can express intangible things.Things which have no narrative, loss, memory "(Crozier). My work also acknowledges the temporal/spiritual, visible and invisible. It also explores the beauty of transience, reminding us to appreciate life.
Many of my artworks have been inspired by Science such as the notion of interconnectedness in creation. For example "the death of stars is the cycle of life and death in the universe. Stars make the heavier elements needed to form planets and build life. Without the death of stars there would be no life, no humans"(Paterson). Everything in the physical universe is made of atoms which in turn are made of particles. Each particle is connected to every other one in the universe. As Dr Eben Alexander says they are all interconnected at the deepest level. John Bell formulated the Bell's theorem at Cern in Geneva in1962. He observed that there is an inseparable quantum connectedness of every part with every other in our universe. No matter how far apart in distance and time, all the particles in a relationship exist beyond space and time.(Leaf) Much of my artwork has developed so that it has become a dialogue between the process of painting and the concept of reimagining creation.
